SPONSORS

Oldbury Park Tigers under 15’s would like to thank their sponsor of the last 7 years Monarch Car Sales for their support. Owner Nick Gwilliam has sponsored 3 kits for the team since the Club first entered the Mercian League at under 9’s age group. Majority of the players were under 8’s and the team remained in the under 9’s the following season. The team moved up the age groups in the Mercian league until the end of the under 12’s season, gaining 4 league runners up trophies and two cup runners up trophies. The team then moved into the Stourport league to play more competitive football. The first season they finished mid table, the second season finishing third and missing out on runners up by one point. They also reached the county cup semi final and league cup semi final. This season the team has been strengthened and are unbeaten after 4 matches.

Having sponsored the team through this successful period the officials, players and parents of the team would like to thank Nick Gwilliam for his valued support over the last 7 seasons. Unfortunately Nick is unable to continue with his sponsorship this season and we have had to get another sponsor. The current kit is now too small for the players but is being passed down to the under 14’s to use.

The team would also like to thank Martin and Denise Griffin of MDG loft conversions [refurbishments] who sponsored the drill tops that were purchased for the players last season. Once again this is greatly appreciated by the officials, players and parents. A team picture with them wearing the drill tops will appear on the web site next month.

match reports

OLDBURY PARK TIGERS 3  V  PERSHORE TOWN 4

Oldbury lost their first league game of the season with another under par performance in the second half. Tigers went into the break 2-0 up following goals from Martin Welsby and Josh Newbold. Tigers made an elementary mistake from the kick off and gifted Pershore a goal. Oldbury restored their 2 goal lead through Josh Newbold after 10 minutes of the second half. Another mistake by Tigers gifted Pershore a second goal, and they equalized when a right wing cross was headed home from 10 yards. Oldbury had two good chances to win the game but Jordan Murton hit the bar with a header, and Josh Newbold was denied one on one with the keeper. Pershore scored in the last 30 seconds to win the game.

Burlish Olympic Youth 0  v  Oldbury Park Tigers 6

The majority of this match was played in high winds and driving rain. However, Tigers managed to play some decent passing football in the first half and dominated the early part of the game. Several good saves by the Burlish keeper and the goal frame kept the scores level for the first 15 minutes. Jordan Murton, James Day, Josh Newbold and Tom Baker all went close. With 18 minutes gone Gavin Murphy opened the scoring with a fine strike from 25 yards. Further goals followed from Tom Baker, Martin Welsby and a rare strike from Jonny Allen gave Oldbury a 4-0 lead at half time. Tigers made several substitutions in the second half bringing players on and off with the rolling subs system. The game became scrappy in the second half as the weather deteriorated further. David Walker and Jack O’sullivan both went close, before Steven Gourley made it 5-0 and Tom Baker got his second for 6-0. Burlish came more into the game in the second half, but the Tigers defence held firm with Ryan Gwilliam and Alex Stratford playing well. Ross Williams in goal had no serious shots to save.

SEASON REVIEW

In 2008-2009 the team had their second season in the Stourport League after moving from the Mercian League. We competed well with all teams finishing third in the league one point behind runners up Kidderminster Lions. The league record was as follows

Played 20 - Won 14 - Drawn 1 – Lost 5 – Scored 49 – Conceded 28.

The team also got to the County Cup Semi Finals and the League Cup Semi Finals. There were two players Jordan Murton and Ryan Gwilliam who played for Stourport Swifts on a Saturday morning in the MJFL League. This was competing against teams from semi professional clubs such as Oxford United & Burton Albion. This was a great experience for the lads and improved their skills by competing against a higher level of opposition. At the end of season awards the following players won individual awards.

Managers Player – Martin Welsby

Players Player – Josh Newbold

Most Improved Player – Gavin Murphy
