Match Report

In another hard fought game, Tigers were unlucky not to get a result against top of the table Newtown and narrowly lost 1-0.

From the start, it was clear there would be a premium placed on commitment and strength given the quagmire of a pitch and the previous week’s encounter at Oldbury.

Tigers started stronger, getting Newtown’s goalkeeper into the action early on. Newtown managed one early break, but Josh showed he was equal to the task. Tigers exerted their authority, harrying Newtown on the ball, never letting them settle and  putting together some swift passing moves to create chance after chance. However, Tigers were unable to convert them and were caught on the break midway through the half, with Newtown taking the lead with a well taken goal.

Tigers did not relent and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty following a clear handball which all but the referee spotted. Tigers continued to play a fluid passing game and created numerous chances, with Newtown’s star player putting in some excellent last ditch tackles to prevent Tigers from equalising before half time, which came with Tigers still 1-0 in arrears.

The second half was played out much like the first, with Tigers creating more chances but lacking that bit of luck. Newtown created one or two chances themselves but Josh kept them at bay. Tigers were foiled in one fluid attack, with Newtown outnumbered, when a Newtown spectator’s dog ran onto the pitch and play was halted, the resulting drop ball going Newtown’s way. One sensed at that point that luck might not be with Tigers on this occasion.

Tigers use of the ball and their commitment were first class throughout the match. A very muddy pitch put a premium on strength and fitness and Tigers were superior on that score, but unfortunately were not able to hit the net despite the chances they created and the match ended 1-0 to Newtown.

Man of the match was Padraig for his thoughtful distribution of the ball, his coverage of the pitch and his commitment to the cause.
