Oldbury Park Tigers Scoop Regional Award

Oldbury Park Tigers Football Club have been awarded the Regional Charter Standard Development Club of the Year Award for the West Midlands.

Having scooped the County award for the same category, the club were nominated for the Regional award and were selected as deserved winners from the panel at The FA to recognise & reward the club’s efforts throughout the past twelve months.

The hard work has not just taken place over the past season though as this year’s awards are added to a host of other awards that the club has received over the past few years, including; County FA Charter Standard Football Club in 2005, County FA Charter Standard Development Club in 2008 and the prestigious FA National Innovation Award in 2008 which was awarded for a school-club link project with Dines Green Primary School - And the recognition does not stop there as this year also saw an individual Workforce Award be awarded to club coach Jon Wilson for his tireless work with the Under 12’s.

David Millbery, Chairman of Oldbury Park Tigers Football Club commented “This is a great accolade as we have now won this award for two years running. It is recognition of all the hard work put in by all of our volunteers and our sponsors who help fund the teams and the other activities we provide. We thank the Worcestershire FA for recognising our efforts again and look forward to an equally successful new season in 2009/2010.”

The Worcestershire FA would like to congratulate the Club and all its members on achieving the award, and thank them for contributing so positively to the development of grassroots football within Worcestershire!

Oldbury Park Tigers Vice Chairman wins award

Worcester City Council Football Development Officer receives workforce award.

Jon Wilson, Football Development officer, Worcester City council, was recently rewarded for his work with Oldbury Park Tigers by the Worcestershire football Association when he received a Football workforce award.

The award was presented to Jon by Matt Jones at the recent Charter Standard Football Festival held at KGV, Brickfields Park after Jon was nominated by the parents and players of the Sunday team he runs. The nomination mentioned that Jon works full time promoting football across Worcester yet continues to give up his free time to continue working with the team and Oldbury Park Tigers in St.Johns and supporting the WFA at their Development Centre at Pershore

Jon commented, “ It was quite a shock to receive this award and to be nominated for something you enjoy doing feels very strange. It is I who should be thanking the team and club as without their support I would not have made the move into football development as a career in the last year. Oldbury Park Tigers is a great club to be involved with and gives me a great model of how a Club should be run having received WFA Charter development club of the year for the last two years running. This can then be transferred into my day job working for the City council promoting football throughout the city and working with volunteer coaches and organisations to encourage participation and the growth of football in Worcestershire “

oldbury park tigers training at worcester city

.

The event sees the welcome return of a working partnership between Worcester City FC Supporters Trust and Worcester City Council Sports Development. Following on from the successful Anti Racism day we have invited two of Worcesters biggest community based clubs to hold training sessions on the hallowed St. Georges turf.

Children ranging from 6 upto 13 years of age from Worcester Lions Fc and Oldbury Park Tigers Fc will be training under the guidance of FA Qualified coaches whilst also receiving valuable advice from City manager Richard Dryden and several Worcester City players. We also have assisting several Junior Football Organisers who are aiming towards receiving national coaching awards on a scheme jointly run by the Worcestershire Fa and Oldbury Park Tigers FC.

Jon Wilson, Football Development Officer Worcester City Council, comments, " Events like these provide the much needed links between Grassroots Football and the semi - professional game. This often leads to enhanced support for both areas increasing both participation in football and local club fan base. It is a welcome opportunity to showcase both the work of the volunteers at these clubs and forge a strong alliance within local football.
Events like these can only be successful when organisations pool their resources and work together so I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following for their continued support throughout this season and on forthcoming events;

Sue Bentley and the Supporters Trust, Worcester City FC, Worcestershire FA, MacDonalds, Co-operative Food Store, St.Johns, Worcester city council, Worcester Lions FC, and , Oldbury Park Tigers FC, without their support , drive and enthuisiasm none of this would have been possible.

Worcester City Supporters' Trust has arranged a commemorative match to mark the 50th anniversary of Worcester City's most memorable victory.

On 15th January 1959 City faced Liverpool in a 3rd round F.A. Cup tie at Saint George's Lane and recorded one the greatest ever giant-killing feats by winning 2-1.

AFC Liverpool have agreed to send their team to Saint George's Lane to play a match against Worcester City to mark the occasion. AFC Liverpool  was formed in 2008 as an alternative for those Liverpool fans who found themselves priced out of watching football in the Premier League.  They are already enjoying a successful first season in the North West Counties League having just won the Division One Trophy and they currently occupy second place in the league table.

One name in their club who City fans will recognise is Paul Moore who made 315 appearances in goal for City in three separate spells with the club. He is now the goalkeeping coach at AFC Liverpool and has also played a key role in helping to arrange the match.

City legend Harry Knowles, who played in the 1959 match, will be present as guest of honour. Other guests attending include Liverpool legend Ronnie Moran.

City manager Richard Dryden has said that he will be putting out his best available side for the game which will take place at Saint George's Lane on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May, kick-off 3pm.

Admission is available on the day at £5 for adults and £3 for children. There is also a limited number of commemorative tickets available. They can be obtained from the club office at Saint George's Lane, from Newtown Post Office, 25 Lichfield Avenue, Worcester, WR5 1NW .

National Innovation Award

On Saturday 22nd September Dave Millberry and Jonathan Wilson from Oldbury Park Tigers, accompanied by Lee Dunn from Dines Green Primary School travelled to London to a prestigious dinner to receive a national award. Oldbury Park Tigers had completed a school-club link coaching programme with Dines Green Primary School over a six week period and had been nominated for one of the inaugural e-on innovation awards in the Urban Sounds category. As part of the project all children took part in a Football Festival and received certificates from the club.

The coaching programme was delivered for two age groups at the school, linked back to the club’s Sunday morning coaching centre. As a result of the project many children have now joined the club from the school who would not otherwise be playing regular football. An excellent relationship has also developed between the school and club with equipment being shared and pitches at the school now regularly being used for club coaching and matches. The project was delivered by coaches from the club and supported by the WFA Development Team.

Andy Norman, WFA County Development Manager said, ‘This was a wonderful achievement by Oldbury Park Tigers to develop football activity at the school and ensure many of the children are playing regularly. I would like to thank the school, but in particular Lee Dunn and all the club volunteers for their excellent work. Special mention should be made of Pat Clark, who was unable to travel to the Awards and other coaches who included Siobhan Vennard and Shane Watton.’

It doesn’t stop there! Lee Dunn will be coaching children at the school on Tuesdays after school, and the WFA will be running a girls only group. In addition Oldbury Park Tigers will be coaching the younger children with WFA support. All children will be given the opportunity to join the Tigers so they can participate in regular club activities.

If you are interested in getting involved in the school club link programme please contact one of the Development Officers at the WFA.
